The Indianapolis metal band Lafcadio brings all the hallmarks of metal music to their second album Kibosh: screaming vocals, spasmodic guitars, a steady pounding bass beat. Yet, the band refuses to fall victim to heavy metal clichés. The compositions are carefully crafted, the instruments and vocals cautiously layered to create a dynamic soundscape that flows from one song into the next. This isn’t a matter of showing how loud they can get, but what they can create with the noise. They also bring a strong sense of humor to the album. The cover art depicts the band happily trapped in a hellish 1979 summer fashion catalogue, roasting teddy bears on a grill.
The band originally formed in 2000 with the name Gogglesphere. But before the release of their first album, Sham Duvet, in 2006, the band had changed their name to Lafcadio, partly because Gogglesphere was constantly mispronounced Googlesphere, and partly out of a desire to take the band in a new direction.
Joyful Noise Recordings continues to mine the weirder side of local music by making Lafcadio’s Kibosh its first release of 2008. The Indianapolis label releases albums celebrating the fringe acts of the local music scene, ranging from the experimental folk of Grampall Jookabox to the thrashing punk of Bloomington’s Push-Pull and Detroit’s Child Bite.
Rounding out Lafcadio’s CD release celebration are the art punk of Stationary Odyssey, the discordant guitar rock of Richard Cranium and the dark instrumentals of Chicago bassist CJ Boyd.
