Kucinich vs. Ron Paul
by Letter to the Editor Dec 5, 2007

I want to commend Steve Hammer for endorsing Dennis Kucinich for president in his NUVO column “A Real Visionary” (Nov. 28-Dec. 5) but I feel I must point out the differences between Kucinich and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. Paul is the darling candidate of those wishing for America to return to the past. So-called “conservative” candidates customarily lure voters with nostalgia for earlier times and Ron Paul is no exception. While Kucinich is a progressive, Ron Paul’s vision advocates a step towards neo-fascism. While I agree with Paul’s position on ending the occupation of Iraq, ending “free-trade” deals such as NAFTA and ending government spying, it’s his position on domestic issues which cause concern. Paul is strongly pro-gun and anti-abortion. Paul is also strongly anti-immigrant and sees no reason why government should play any role in stopping racism or aiding undocumented immigrants. Paul condemns the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. It’s no wonder he is endorsed by David Duke and hate groups such as the KKK.

While Kucinich wants to create a “Works Green Program” similar to FDR’s New Deal, there is nothing on Ron Paul’s Web site about his vision for the environment or a sustainable energy policy. Let’s hope the fascination with Ron Paul is just a fad just like lynching was in the earlier days of America.
