Kool Keith is one of the biggest — if not the biggest — characters in hip-hop. A mad scientist whose creations are constantly evolving, his music might not make sense to those that are completely sane. Two mad scientists actually: There was his Dr. Octagon, a twisted gynecologist, who was murdered by his dreadful Dr. Dooom. That’s not to mention Black Elvis, an alien rock star, and a host of other monikers: Rhythm X, Mr. Kerbeck, Keith Korg, Robbie Analog, Matthew. Listeners were introduced to the bedrock nickname, Kool Keith, when the first Electromagnetic MC’s single dropped in 1984, and were reminded of the rapper’s twisted and pornographic rhymes when Prodigy lifted Keith’s “Change my pitch up / Smack my bitch up” from the 1988 MC’s track “Give the Drummer Some.”
His latest undertaking, Project X, is coming by the Vogue Oct. 14, bringing a Halloween vibe a few weeks early. Project X reunites Keith with Analog Brothers partner Marc Live and old school West Coast legend Tim Dog. Electronically sent a few questions to producer/emcee Marc Live about their recent outing.
NUVO: How did growing up knowing Kool Keith affect your style?
Marc Live: It was big because I used to hear him rap on the phone and was like, “Damn, this guy’s mind is so advanced, I’ve got to get on that level!”
NUVO: Can you explain to the uninitiated what Project X is?
Marc: It’s Tim Dog, the boss; Marc Live, the rock star; and Kool Keith, the photographer. It’s just a superhero project wherein we can really be our alter egos and have a free rhyming lane with no conformities.
NUVO: What can we expect at your live show?
Marc: Pure hip-hop and action. We are individuals but come together on stage and rock shit! Definitely a lot of enthusiasm. The crowds really appreciate the vintage, real music. They have been crazy!
NUVO: How does the process of creating music with this group differ from other projects you’ve been involved in?
Marc: Well, this project [we were] a lot freer to be creative. I did 90 percent of the production and played Keith the tracks and he went ape on the beats, the same with Tim!
