Great Day in Indy

Saturday, June 1 offers up a full day of jazz events, including a historic photo shoot and a local jazz awards ceremony. Photographer Mark Sheldon will hold a historical photo shoot featuring 100 or more local (or once-local) jazz musicians at 10:30 a.m. at the Indiana HIstorical Society. A contingent of New York transplants from Indy will make the trip for the event. The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation will be making a commemorative poster print of the photo, with all proceeds going to jazz education.

After the photo shoot, you will have a chance to meet and dine with dozens of jazz artists at the Columbia Club. A "Brunch Buffest and Jam Session" hosted by the African-Amiercan Jazz Caucus runs from noon-3 p.m. Tickets for the brunch are $30. For reservations, call the Columbia Club at 317-761-7523 and as for Madonna.

Later in the day at the Jazz Kitche, the Ralph Adams Lifetime Achievement Awards will be held at 6 p.m. Adams, the Sunday voice of jazz on WICR-FM, will present awards to pianists Steve Allee abd Claude Sifferlen, and vocalists Everett Greene, Mary Moss and Hazel Johnson Strong. Drummer Jack Gilfoy will be awarded posthumously. Performing after the awards will be the legendary Jimmy Guilford and Everette Greene. Tickets are $15; for reservations, call 317-253-4900.

I can affirm that the exhibition offers much to savor, in addition to a gift shop the likes of which you’ve never tasted. It offers history and lore...
