You can make a case that the last, best time for American literature was the 1980s, when new writing — and the short story, in particular — went through a renaissance. Jayne Anne Phillips was at the cutting edge of that movement, and her first collection of stories, Black Tickets, was essential reading. To find out what Phillips is writing now, go to the University of Indianapolis (1400 E. Hanna Ave.) March 6 at 7:30 p.m. Phillips will read and discuss her work in Good Hall. Admission is free.
