Jason Myers: A Ten Year Retrospect
Myers Design, Inc (MDI), The Gallery; Jason Myers of Myers Design Inc. – known for custom architectural millwork – has extended into the contemporary gallery scene in a gorgeously renovated space at the Stutz II. Gallery manager Andrea Going enthusiastically outlined the gallery’s goal to host solo shows by artists who “push the limits in their given mediums.” Myers’ own paintings and furniture from the past ten years (works will rotate over 90 days) represents the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. Methodical and consistent, Myers’ abstract, figurative nude paintings – mostly of males – aren’t about pressing boundaries, but expressing subjects’ internal struggles or emotional states. In each canvas of the triptych, “Don’t,” heavy, abstract strokes of overlapping colors, probably applied with a palette knife, construct a centralized nude against a textural background. Paint application and implied details seem planned to show figures’ angst. Mark-making becomes text or thins to linear drips. Works have a masculine feel emphasized by handcrafted, thick wood frames that relate to Myers’ interior wood furniture: wardrobes, dining table with chairs and the like. Broad, geometric slabs of wood, altering colors and patterns, and some Japanese design elements – traits of Frank Lloyd Wright’s furniture – characterize Myers’ fabrications. Although well thought out, a dose of spontaneity would bring lightness and animation to pieces. (317) 955-2450, www.myersdesign.net
