Japanese 'sit-down' comedy
by Editors Jun 18, 2008

Rakugo is the traditional sit-down style of Japanese comic storytelling that goes back centuries. June 24, Kaishi Katsura, a rakugo master, will bring Rakugo to the Carmel High School Auditorium as part of a 22-city tour of the United States. Katsura has appeared in over 200 performances in 12 different countries.

With only a towel and fan as props, the Rakugo master embodies different characters, relying on voice, gestures and facial expressions. All the stories, whether contemporary or traditional, embrace universal human experience.

This performance, which will be taped for Japanese television, is part of a celebration of Japan-America Society of Indiana’s 20th anniversary, and is in English. The performance starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information, go to www.japanindiana.org or call 317-635-0123.
