Clarian Health Concerts on the Canal; Indiana History Center; June 7

Guitar virtuoso Sandy Williams joined Gilfoy on percussion, Steve Dokken on bass and Ken Fary on keyboard for a masterful performance of the music of the legendary jazz guitarist. This reviewer picked up the concert following intermission, regretting missing the first part yet delighting in the offerings of the 1960s, including Montgomery’s memorable arrangements of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and Mancini’s slow and easy “Days of Wine and Roses.” Williams captured the introspective essence of Montgomery, for whom jazz was a philosophy of life. The foursome executed the intricate patterns in Montgomery’s particular walking-with-an-attitude style of jazz, particularly evident in his “Full House,” “West Coast Blues” and “Road Song,” one of the last pieces he wrote. For a foursome that gathered for the first time to play this concert, it was a delight to watch and hear them working together to showcase the work of one of Indiana’s great musicians.
