IVCI Laureate Chamber Series: Stefan Milenkovich
by Tom Aldridge May 14, 2008

Four stars
Indiana History Center, May 11.

The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis turned to light-veined, crowd pleasing material for its final concert of the season. And a crowd there was; the Basile Theater was sold out nearly half an hour before the concert started. The program featured both 1994 silver medalist Stefan Milenkovich and the IU String Academy and Violin Virtuosi. The IU group started the program with Béla Bartók’s Rumanian Folk Dances, and conductor Brenda Brenner making her only appearance. This was followed by a piano and string orchestra version of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances Nos. 6 and 8, with Chih-Yi Chen returning from her April 8 IVCI concert. Then came the “original” version of Grigoras Dinicu’s only known piece, “Hora Staccato,” using the same forces as in the Brahms. Milenkovich finally made his appearance with Mendelssohn’s early Violin Concerto in D Minor for string orchestra. Milenkovich stood in the center with the strings half circling him. Following the break, we heard Milenkovich  in “La Campanella” from Paganini’s B Minor Violin concerto, with Chen on the piano doing the orchestral parts. Finally we had one of Astor Piazzolla’s most ambitious works, the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Milenkovich again centering the half circle. All performed excellently.

Among the most memorable shows I’ve seen all year, the exhibition lives up to its claims: There’s nothing sweet about it -- and yet the work is, almost...
Do you think some of the state's Major Moves money should be dedicated to mass transit projects?
