Ingrid Calame: Traces of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
The Indianapolis Museum of Art has been on a roll, bringing in artists for more interactive, site-specific explorations of artmaking, from the recent Adrian Schiess installation to larger-scale efforts such as the Art and Nature Park. In its Forefront Gallery, Los Angeles artist Ingrid Calame has contributed her take on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, an admittedly tired icon of the city that more often generates photography and other commemorative-style artmaking. Calame’s response is an entirely different animal. Evoking at once the delicately realized, but powerfully erotic, stitched and drawn images of Ghada Amer (whose work is included in the IMA’s permanent collection) and topographical maps, Calame worked with a group of volunteers to make tracings of the Speedway and refashioned them as art onto Mylar. The resulting drawings have no obvious reference points to the Speedway, and yet they retain the frenetic pace of car racing — and her colorful interpretations serve as sort of a metaphorical extension.
