The fine folks from Indymetal.com had a full house on hand to witness the mighty Devil To Pay’s return to the Eastside rock institution Zanies Too. Janiak and Co. put on a typically brutal sludge attack. Chad Prifogle is a monster drummer who impresses me more each time I see him, but it was new guitarist Billy Lee who was the revelation.

Playing a badass cherry Flying V, Lee added a clean slice and dice attack that made for a nice undercurrent to the doom of DTP. Mark my word, DTP’s next record will be the one that does it for them, and Lee will be a big reason for that.

Louisville, Ky.’s Glasspack came next and unleashed a dirty, greasy and relentlessly heavy set. Taking its cue from Black Oak Arkansas rather than Black Sabbath, these boys put on a show with frantic energy and distorted soundwaves slamming into your noggin. Doing a set heavy on tunes from its new Dirty Women CD, the band was about as tight a three-piece as you could get. The bassist and drummer did an awesome job of keeping it low, sloppy and rumbling, while “Dirty” Dave, the frontman, channeled Jim Dandy vocals with Duane Allman riffage.

Lafcadio, the Indy rockers formerly known as Gogglesphere, ended the night, playing its delightful blend of prog, hardcore punk and straight-up metal. Bonus points go to the band for having the best song title of the year so far: “Fat Camp Panty Raid.”
