On Saturday night, local pop— a somewhat rare breed — is at Spin Nightclub. Headlining that night are three powerhouse performers: Vika (pronounced Vee-Kah), MVL and Lynda Sayyah. The show was organized by MVL, who, after a few years of holding it down with the boys at various hip-hop shows, decided the time was right to take the reins and put together her dream lineup. This seems like the type of act that would happen more often — three attractive ladies with diverse audiences but similar musical sensibilities joining forces to put on a big concert. Yet they all had the same reservations. “I thought, it’s going to be a bunch of divas, all trying to do the same thing … but we all get along so well,” Sayyah says.  

Though all three women make R&B/pop music, they arrived at their styles very differently. MVL grew up in a musical family; her father is a punk rock musician in the band Toxic Reasons. She becomes more emotional when she recalls the first time she told her father she was playing at Spin, a venue he knew well from playing there in its former Patio days. “It brought a tear to his eye,” she says. “Music is our common bond.”

Sayyah’s path was somewhat different. Growing up in a strict Arab and Muslim household, her parents disapproved of her musical career. She wasn’t discouraged: “I fight back with my music,” Sayyah says. She works her heritage into her songwriting, sometimes singing in Arabic or Spanish.

Vika, who grew up in Moldova, has always had very supportive parents. “I don’t usually sing in Russian,” she admits, though her accent still peeks through, giving extra flavor to her sultry ballads.

The ladies have gone all out for this show, with sponsors providing wardrobe, makeup and hair, and jewelry. The stage will be packed with musicians, DJs, dancers and a film crew. The first 50 attendees will receive a free CD sampler with all three Angels.
