Indy Pendence Day
Three stars
Art Bank; July 4
There was, of course, plenty of art on display at the Art Bank’s Indy Pendence Day. But there was also complimentary beer from Upland Brewing Company, a wine tasting hosted by New Day Meadery and loads of free food. The featured artist was sculptor Mark Rinehart. His abstract free-standing aluminum and steel works might not appeal to everyone, but his wall-hanging electric guitars are certainly worth a look. Twenty-two artists currently rent space at the gallery. Many were on hand that night; some were at work. Under her painting “Gas, Food, Lodging,” which features iconic interstate signage from the past century, Janet Bunch was burning butterfly designs onto the backs of wood hairbrushes. And Carmen Hurt’s painting “Heatwave,” with its wilting buildings under a withering sun, is a surreal take on a hot summer day in the city. After sundown on this particular summer day, revelers gathered in the Art Bank parking lot to watch the downtown fireworks. 317-624-1010.
