Indy Eats 06/07/06
by Terry Kirts Jun 7, 2006

Tune into Too Many Cooks on WICR, 88.7 FM at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, when Patti and Gary welcome Joe Lazzara of Joe’s Butcher Shop and Fish Market in Carmel, which opened at the first of the year. Lazzara is sourcing as much of his meat and poultry as possible in Indiana, including Amish chicken and his dry-aged meats. He’ll talk about cuts of meat and best results when cooking them on the grill.

Soccer fans who don’t want to miss a single kick in this year’s World Cup in Germany will want to head to Radio Radio in Fountain Square to catch all the action. From June 9 to July 9, the bar, known more for its live music and eclectic crowds, will be serving up all 64 World Cup matches, even the ones at 9 a.m., along with eggs, beer-soaked brats and $2 Budweisers — no matter what real Germans would say about the American brew. Radio Radio is located at 1119 Prospect St. Call 317-955-0995 for more details.

June is when the summer festival season kicks into high gear in Indianapolis. One sure sign that summer is almost here is the 41st Annual Strawberry Festival this Thursday, June 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until the strawberries and shortcakes last) on Monument Circle. Sponsored by Cathedral Women of Christ Church Cathedral, the festival annually draws happy throngs of downtown folks for homemade shortcakes topped with strawberries, ice cream and whipped cream. The “Works” is still just $5. Live music includes the Indianapolis Symphony Brass Ensemble at 12:15 p.m. and the Murat Banjo Band at 3:15.

Also, don’t miss the Italian Street Festival this Friday and Saturday night from 5 to 11 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 520 Stevens St., in historic Fletcher Place. With over 25 featured dishes, live music, rides, games and dancing, it’s one of the most spirited weekends of the year. Don’t miss the toasted ravioli and dessert booth. Relive history and experience a colorful street procession at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free, and parking is available in the Eli Lilly lots on East and New Jersey streets. For more information, visit www.italianheritage.org/streetfestival.htm.

Dream Dinners in Fishers, located at 9520 Uptown Drive, Suite H, is now taking reservations for a Parent & Child Session on Saturday, June 17 at 2:30 p.m. This six-entree session gives parents the opportunity to bring their children in and assemble meals together. One parent should be coupled with one child each, and children must be at least 8 years old to attend this session. To sign up for this special session, call 317-842-1130.

The French Quarter Cajun Bar & Grill has recently opened just north of Raymond Street at 2137 S. Meridian. Owned by New Orleans natives who found a number of their friends in the Indy area after Hurricane Katrina, The French Quarter serves up an authentic menu of Cajun favorites with a full bar and stage for music and poetry readings. For more information, call 317-780-0070.

Among the most memorable shows I’ve seen all year, the exhibition lives up to its claims: There’s nothing sweet about it -- and yet the work is, almost...
