Indianapolis skinheads appear in court
by Wayne Bertsch Aug 29, 2007
Trial date set for assault of homeless man
The wheels of justice inched forward last week when members of the Vinlander Social Club appeared in Marion County court.
The defendants, Eric Fairburn, Josh Kern and Timothy Dumas, appeared at a pre-trial hearing before Judge Tanya Walton-Pratt. The three are charged with assaulting Dexter Lewis, a black male, in downtown Indianapolis on March 26, 2007. (NUVO “Hate Crimes in Indiana,” June 20, 2007; www.nuvo.net/articles/hate_crimes_in_indiana)
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Vinlanders are “a skinhead warrior clan devoted to drinking and fighting.” Co-founded by Fairburn in 2004, the group maintains an Indianapolis “clubhouse” on the 2500 block of English Avenue, the primary residence of Fairburn and Dumas according to court documents.
Despite record-high temperatures, Kern and Dumas, both out on bond, appeared in court wearing long-sleeved shirts that hid the racist tattoos that cover their arms. Fairburn, who remains in police custody, was unable to obscure his numerous tattoos in his prison-issue orange jumpsuit.
Dumas has a tattoo of the symbol of Hitler’s Waffen SS while Kern and Fairburn each have the number “28” tattooed on top of their heads. The 28 stands for the second and eighth letters of the alphabet, short for “Blood & Honour,” the European racist organization with whom the Vinlanders align themselves. Fairburn also has a large tattoo of the word “MURDER” across his throat.
Mark Inman, the public defender representing Fairburn, requested and was granted a continuance to allow time to depose witnesses to the assault, who allege that they were threatened with death if they called the police. Depositions will be taken Sept. 21. A jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 15.

Hey Uncle Louis, your middle initial is "R" right? hahaha. Uncle Louis, if that is you, I'll try to reach you in a town worth leaving. I'll try to call tomorrow. The out come is this: We'll go to court, get convicted on this witch hunt and then have to do some time. I want to thank the court reporter artist for drawing me like Crusty the Clown. Larry Fine (Three Stooges) haircut and a shaved head at the same time, with a goatee I didn't have that day and "Skinhead" across the forehead (a nice touch) and all the other silliness in tow. You can always count on NUVO for 100% accuracy LOL. As for the case, I posted comments else where as well on NUVO but the fact remains the zealots on both sides of the fence are getting a lot of air time on this case and its well with the realm of hysteria and hype now on the internet and abroad. My judge is a member of the NAACP so we'll see if justice truly applies in this case and is she has the fortitude to accurately access this case without the hype and drama of the ADL and SPLC horror story profiling. Up until this case I didn't have a criminal record. However, the "Victim" in this case has a very extensive one and has had many altercations in his past. When it boils down to it, the zealots can not define me and never will be able to. I just ain't that easy to pigeon hole. So I might have to go do some time for a fist fight where the victim refused medical treatment and barely got a bruise. So be it. All it does is fuel the fires for zealots and morons on both sides of the fence. The real winner here is the ADL and SPLC for again using cases like these to push their political agenda. Yawn.

Story
by Update | Nov 1, 2007
The bloggers of Nuvo have wised up and now must "approve" of comments regarding their future stories because they got to much flak from an open comment posting system.
Just a bunch of boo hoo marxist hype. And in typical marxist form, they've shut down comments on their other news blogs without their Stalin-esque approval. Nice unbiased reporting.
What about the 3 real victims in this case? It looks like three white guys will have their lives ruined because some jackass who happens to be black spit at and attacked them. Nice.

Cheap way to get support
by Dr. Unsung | Sep 22, 2007
It looks like the ADL and SPLC along with various lawyers will be the big winners here. They'll be able to scare the general public into sending them checks while promoting this as some grand racist attack. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Terrify the average joe with biased reports and "bad-guy" profiling. It's a shame the "victim" here is a multiple felon. Look up the criminal records on line like the others have said. There can be little doubt this story has more to it than what is being told. What has so far been said was just par for the course drama.

Same old hype
by Randy Olson | Sep 22, 2007
Why not just crucify these guys and get it over with? You've already got your mind made up, guilty and worthy of death. The whole idea that this "poor homeless blackman" is automatically a saint and innocent of all wrong doing is also just as laughable. Have you seen Dexter Lewis's criminal record? The defendants in this case might not be saint, but their relatively clean records (public intox and seat belt violations don't seem to prove a history of violence) should be worth something. Seems to me the typical far-left media irresponsibly attacked these defendants to promote a social agenda rather than accurately report the story.

What a Fukar!
by MAC | Sep 11, 2007
Well Mr. Fukar. It's neither my job nor is it the responsibility of this news source to "call" for a biased news article either way. By printing addresses of those involved on either side is totally irresponsible, and by passing judgment on a case which has yet to pass through the court system is biased. completely. Give the facts, to be a decent news source. See if your readers are smart enough to build their OWN opinion.

Whose side are you on?
by Buddy Fukar | Sep 3, 2007
I love how everyone who seems to be calling for "unbiased" reporting is actually calling for "differently biased" reporting; that is, you either want the words "homeless black crack-head" to appear in print (as though that makes all parties equal), OR you want NUVO to avoid any reference to "racist skinheads" (which the three men charged appear to be). Yet the article purports to be about a “hate crime,” in which case the latter information IS relevant, while the former is only relevant in terms of race (i.e., black). Now, if this was a report about the “unfair” nature of hate crime legislation, I would expect different word choices, but would regard it as no less biased. The sooner the myth of “objective” media is laid to rest, as both a public and professional expectation, and as a position from which to argue one's side, the better off America will be.

Iam shocked that you would make such a poor decision in printing these peoples addresses to the public! There are too many crazy people in the world today to do such a thing, what if there are children in the house?Did you ever think about that?Shame on you!Thats just a lawsuit waiting to happen!
You've written a biased one sided ill reported story and quite possibly endangered people!

by indychick | Sep 2, 2007
i gotta admit, the whole 'freedom of speech' thing lets you do this, but to pretend like you're reporting in such a manner is appalling. do you actually think you can sway anyone's mindset with your poor coverage and lack of truth? just reading the comments alone on this makes anyone want to research a bit themselves i am sure, and this supposed 'victim' seems to have pulled the wool over your eyes. that or you never actually spoke to anyone and just ran with putting your opinions out there. where do you get your info? the SPLC? hahaha they're a joke, and if you consider that true reporting, well, try reading from a REAL source.

Everyone's a "victim"
by Mrs BD | Sep 1, 2007
I work to support my family, pay my bills, & ensure I have a place to live. I could easily squander my money on drugs, live on the streets, & expect the community to hand over their hard earned cash to support me. It's easier to be a "victim" in this society than it is to be responsible, hard working members of the community. Perhaps if Mr. Lewis, the alleged "victim" in this case chose to not spend his money on drugs (check his arrest record,it is public record), he would not have to harass and attempt to intimidate the public into giving him money & wouldn't have gotten himself into such a self induced predicament. I applaud the actions of these gentlemen for defending themselves. Perhaps all the bleeding heart liberals should adopt all the homeless bums & support them. Then the rest of us could walk down the street in peace & not be accosted, harrassed, & begged for money. Be responsible for yourself folks. Stop rolling over & allowing liberals to guilt you into feeling bad about protecting yourself & keeping what is rightfully yours. Look at the state of affairs our country is currently in, regarding immigration because we've allowed ourselves to become so docile & not stood up for ourselves. By being guilted into a status of submission, we are quickly losing everything we hold dear. I wish these gentlemen the best of luck with their case.

Unfair coverage
by Michigan | Sep 1, 2007
Excellent article! If perhaps judged by the standards of newsworthy literature such as the National Enquirer. Since when is the SPLC considered a reliable source of info? Their entire existence revolves around smearing the names of individuals who's political views are not directly aligned with their pigeonholed agenda.
Nearly half of this article obsesses over the defendants' looks and attire. Is this an unbiased news story or an excerpt of a fashion review for Vogue magazine?
It is quite apparent that this article is predisposed to attempt to steer the opinion on the public to align their thoughts with that of the biased writer, rather than objectively presenting FACTS. An unbiased story would allow the public to form their own opnions based on FACTS instead of hearsay, rumors, and narrowmindedness.
I would hope your readers are intelligent enough to read between the lines of this bigotry and form educated opinions rather than allow themselves to be forcefed the writer's unfounded, rumor-based opinions.

Wow What happened to "Innocent Until Proven Guilty"? This NUVO article has gone right past the trial process and skipped right to the sentencing part. Last time I checked all 3 of these men were American citizens and have the right to a fair trial. NUVO is being very one sided here. I don't see them mentioning that Dexter Lewis is a crackhead who harrasses and threatens people into giving him money. The Indianapolis Star gave a much more fair report of this case, unlike NUVO who apparently likes to report just the pieces they feel like reporting.

look...im not at all for what the three guys did to this man, but i think its a little funny that one of the key statements that they made in here was about their long sleeves. ive been to court a couple times...and one of the things that i have always done is dressed nice. i could be wrong, but doesn't wearing a nice shirt and tie usually involve long sleeves of some sort?

A lesson learned
by The Knightstown Boys | Aug 31, 2007
Maybe the Indianapolis Star and other credible news sources learned a lesson back in the year 2000 when the Marion County prosecutor had to go on TV and explain that a case which he had trumped up as a hate crime, was not a hate crime. The SPLC, which this newspaper cites as a "sunbstantiated" source, still lists that "crime" and the names of the falsely accused men in thier "hate crimes" reports. As if they were convicted. ----There is nothing like being set free after a false imprisonment, and still having people accuse you of committing a crime for the rest of your life.---- Do you even investigate these cases, or your sources, Laura McPhee?

The Indy Star gave a much better non biased story on this case which is the way it should be!I did a little search on the defendants & victem.I was surprised to find the victim has convictions for possesion of drugs amongst other charges.I dont see anyone talking about that.Seems very one sided!

I thought journalists were supposed to present all aspects of a story, not just the side they believe is right. The Indy Star newspaper had more fair and accurate coverage. I think you are also forgetting that this so called victim is a criminal.

If any comments posted slandering the individuals involved are to be deleted, then shouldn't some of the content of the article be deleted as well? After all, the manner in which the accused have been represented in this article could in itself be misconstrued as prejudiced. I agree that this is a biased, one-sided article. If you plan on reporting about such a controversial subject and including such personal information, perhaps all sides of the story should be included rather than the reporter's narrow view.

Furthering an agenda
by William | Aug 30, 2007
NUVO is trying to use this case to push for hate crimes legislation. The coverage of this event should serve a a warning against hate crimes legislation to any sane person.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are not discussed. Public information which is relevant to the incident is being censored and ignored.
NUVO only seems concerned with reporting its own personal judgements about who the perpetrators are, and what they allegedly beleive. Which is exactly what liberals want to do with hate crimes. Hate drime laws are not meant to further protect certain victims. They just want to further punish certain citizens for having politically incorrect opinions.

Why does Nuvo not feel the need to publish all angles of the stories it covers? Much as they say the three defendants are racist skinheads, Dexter Lewis is a homeless Crackhead. That is just as relevant as the facts the NUVO decides to publish.
