Three stars

North United Methodist Church; June 10

Spirited to soulful, saucy to sentimental, the Indianapolis Brass Choir sings melodies as sonorously today as in ancient times when differently pitched hunting horns sent messages. Another of Indy’s best-kept secrets, the Brass Choir closed its 21st season with a program showing the range and agility of trumpets, horns, trombones, euphoniums and tubas, in concert with percussion. Voiced, as in a vocal choir’s range, music for the brass choir can be specially composed or arranged from any other source, thus Paul Dukas’ Fanfare to call us to attention and selections from Richard Rodgers’s The King and I (arranged by Denis Wright) to invite us to sing and whistle along; William Mathias’ Vivat Regina to honor Queen Elizabeth and Jim Williams’ arrangement of Bill Conti’s Theme from Rocky to have us imagine half-time marching band configurations. Williams is a euphonium player and treasurer of the Brass Choir. Jim Edison, another Indianapolis resident, arranged a dramatic “America the Beautiful,” which premiered at this concert. The ensemble performs a dozen concerts a year, mostly dedicated to helping churches raise funds for a charity of each church’s choosing. Log on to www.indybrass.org.
