IMA opens Asian galleries
by Editors Nov 1, 2006

At last. The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Asian collection is one of the museum’s great strengths. On a trip to Indianapolis, the late, great American poet Robert Creeley made a point of stopping at the IMA to peruse the Chinese bronzes on display. It’s cause for celebration that the expanded and refurbished Asian galleries are finally reopening after a three-year renovation. They have doubled in size, making it possible for the museum to share more of its collection with the public than ever before. In addition to the Chinese bronzes, there are jades, ceramics, textiles and paintings. The Japanese art collection includes paintings, lacquer ware, woodblock prints and sculpture. Other Asian cultures represented include Korea, Tibet, India and Southeast Asia. The new installations are designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. The Asian galleries will open to the public Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along with tea demonstrations and tastings, a traditional yak dance and gallery blessings by Tibetan monks, dragon and lion dancing, children’s activities and films. The IMA is located at 4000 Michigan Rd.
