Three and a half stars (R)

Dreamlike docudrama “inspired by the life and work of Bob Dylan” from filmmaker Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) with aspects of the man represented by a variety of actors, including Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and, most impressively, Cate Blanchett. The surreal proceedings get sluggish at times and the “Dylan goes electric” segment is overdone, but the film works surprisingly well. For Dylan buffs and adventurous film goers. 135 minutes. DVD INFO: The two-disc collector’s edition includes a commentary track, deleted and extended scenes, outtakes, featurettes and a tribute to Heath Ledger.
