How right he was
by Letter to the Editor Mar 26, 2008

I doubt if you and I would agree on very many specific subjects before the state’s General Assembly (News, “State Lawmakers Pass Property Tax Reform,” March 19-26), but I’ll bet we could easily agree with the assessment of our old friend, Harrison Ullmann, that we have about the worst state Legislature in the country.

When he used to write that, I always thought he was just trying to be funny. But after the last couple sessions, and especially after following what was going on this year, I see he was absolutely right.

I always wonder whether most of our legislators are really that stupid or if they are that bought and paid for.

Most of their positions and votes were absolutely stupid and truly indefensible.

I even saw one state legislator (Murphy) was quoted in The Star that he didn’t care what his constituents thought, that he would be re-elected however he voted because the voters never paid any attention. He bragged he had been re-elected several times despite very serious votes contrary to what was good for his constituency.

Most of our state legislators seem to have no conscience or sense of honor whatsoever. They seem to have no feeling of obligation to what is “right” or “fair.” They mostly have contempt for the voters.

Every one of them should be replaced by the voters, but, as Rep. Murphy bragged, not enough of them even pay attention to how he votes on anything.

I wish I could have told Mr. Ullmann just how right he was.
