Hot Licks & Cool Chicks: Women of Jazz (plus one male)
by Editors Aug 13, 2008

Keyboardist/composer/arranger Monika Herzig moved the multilayered program along with audience-inclusive patter in the best jazz tradition. She and a roster of seven others covered the genre from old favorites to new compositions. Vocalists Vickie Daniel, Kelleen Strutz and Janiece Jaffe were backed by fiddle player Carolyn Dutton, bassist Jennifer Kirk, clarinetist Shawn Plonski, drummer Lawrence Clark and Herzig. Daniel enlivens jazz in the tradition of the early stylists. Strutz, equally fine as a keyboardist, and Jaffe especially pleased with scatting, each in a distinctive vocal style — Jaffe being closer to wordless singing. Together, they were truly a dynamic trio in renditions of “Natural Woman,” “Imagine” and “Route 66.” On their own, the combo pleased with a light-hearted touch and solo licks. Herzig reminded us that anyone can get into the jazz groove as a listener through IUPUI’s continuing ed course “Intro to Jazz.” —RK

I can affirm that the exhibition offers much to savor, in addition to a gift shop the likes of which you’ve never tasted. It offers history and lore...
