High C at the Sunset Terrace
by Chuck Workman Oct 31, 2007

By Barney Quick; AuthorHouse; $9.20

This novel is based around Indiana Avenue’s legendary jazz clubs of the late ’40s, focusing on jazz trumpeter Marvin Turner and singer Cheryl Johnson’s love story and the challenges they face in their careers. Quick did extensive research on the places, people and music that gave Indiana Avenue its legendary status. He sprinkles the names of real clubs, businesses and their owners of that era throughout as settings for Turner and Johnson. Quick, who is a musician, uses technical music terms when describing bandstand performances that may be intimidating to the less musically hip. High C at The Sunset Terrace is an entertaining read as the stars and their music of that era are generously placed throughout. Historically, the book is a glimpse of an oppressive era and a people proud of their community and culture. www.authorhouse.com.
