HEARTBREAK HOTEL: THE SONGS OF ELVIS PRESLEY
by Josefa Beyer Aug 1, 2007

One star

American Cabaret Theatre;directed by Carol Worcel & Kenny Shepard

Sharing writing, directing and choreography credits, Carol Worcel and Kenny Shepard get the blame for this shameless attempt to cash in on the 30th anniversary of the King’s death. Neither musical theater nor concert tribute, Heartbreak strings together 39 Elvis hits sung and “acted out” by eight characters living in a flophouse — emphasize flop. Early comic numbers “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Angel in Disguise,” sung by dweeb Desk Clerk (Tim Hunt) and sidekick Bellhop (John Phillips), offer hope that camp will save the night. However, with no dialogue or sensible story line, the inn mates are trapped in a series of hackneyed bits with childish blocking. Sad lover sings “She’s Not You” to a picture frame. Thief fondles stolen fur while crooning “In the Ghetto.” Newlyweds frolic to “Burnin’ Love” with all the sex appeal of My Little Pony. Forgetting that Elvis’ pelvis moved a generation to a trembling dance floor, Worcel and Shepard parse out the choreography in tiny, uninteresting morsels and two small ensemble numbers that hint at what might have been. With powerful singers like Deaon Smith and Amanda Lawson, plus pianist John Austin Butsch ripping into the piano like Jerry Lee Lewis, I could envision a heart-pounding musical with frenzied dancers on stage and off. I had plenty of time to think about it, bored as I was with the reality. Through Aug. 19; 317-631-0334.

At least they aren't still using those ridiculous slides like they used to. As far as being the best show... I agree, not their best but quite enjoyable, nonetheless. Definitely better than reading senseless slides while someone stands ans sings.

The Director

Wonder-er, FYI, Kenny Shepherd is the DIRECTOR! He co-conceived, directed, and choreographerd the show with Carol Worcel. They are both extremely talented and I agree with you. They don't deserve the slam!!

The Best Show?
by Wonder-er | Aug 7, 2007

One of the best shows at ACT? Are you kidding??? In comparison with things like Evita, Cabaret, even their own shows: Gershwins, Cole Porter, Broadway Now, Fabulous 50's, etc., I'd hardly say this is even in the ball park. It's a high school production at best. Elvis definitely wasn't in the building!! On the other hand, I think Kenny Shepard is extremely talented, and doesn't deserve the slam. The DIRECTOR should be called to task on that one. Where is he???

A review with a Vengence
by flabbergasted | Aug 4, 2007

WOW! Did Kenny Shepard stand you up for your senior prom with Carol Worcel. You sound like a bitter bitter woman. I saw the production of Heartbreak Hotel last night and in my opinion, it was one of the BEST shows I've ever seen at the American Cabaret Theatre. After reading Josefa Beyer's scathing review of that show, I just had to see it. I'm a big Elvis fan and originally did not want to go because there is no one that can hold a candle to the KING. Kenny and Carol's vision for "Hearbreak" was on the money. No one tried to sound like Elvis and I appreciate that. I personally think the dancing parts were perfect and executed well by all of the members of the cast. And what a compilation of voices! Thank you directors for giving me a wonderful memory of my favorite entertainer. I'm coming back and bringing all my friends. Is there such a thing a s a "reviewers" school? I think someone needs to enroll Josefa.

Hotel "scorned" by loveless!
by Not an Elvis Fan | Aug 3, 2007

I totally disagree with the review of Heartbreak Hotel. I must have missed the stand where they were selling Elvis memorabilia. I would say they stopped way short of "cashing in". I am not a fan of Elvis music, but still managed to go with an open mind. I wasn't expecting Broadway or even a skiewed version, and was therefore not disappointed. Worcel and Shepard didn't sell the show as the "Dances of Elvis", rather the "Music of Elvis", so the lack of dancing was not indicative of a poorly choreographed show. Nor do I think it was written to win any major awards. The only bit that was spot on was the review of the show's two strongest singers!

The Reviewer is RIGHT!
by Indy Arts Truth | Aug 3, 2007

Thank God there's a reviewer with an eye for the truth in Indy. I totally agree with his assessment of the show. A good director would have seen the flaws...and started over! It's another "typical" show by ACT trying to make everyone believe they know about art. Nice try, ACT, but we can't be fooled by your "High School" productions!

I don't know what show the reviewer saw!
by Indy Theatre Fan | Aug 1, 2007

I saw Heartbreak Hotel this weekend and aside from some sound system issues, I thought it was WON-DER-FUL. I am a HUGE Elvis Presley fan and I thought it was a fantastic tribute to his music. We so often see some horrible attempt at impersonation and it was refreshing to see a new approach. I especially loved the characters and all the different storylines. Kudos to the Cabaret, Mr. Shepherd and Ms. Worcel
