When Hank III comes to the Vogue Sunday, he will bring one heck of a show — truly something for everybody. It could be the rollicking honky tonk set full of poignant songs like Wayne “The Train” Hancock’s “Thunderstorms and Neon Signs” that tickles your fancy or it could be a full-on hardcore death-metal show where most of the lyrics contain multiple cusswords and references to whiskey, weed and women. But then again, most of his country stuff is about that as well (hence his song of the same name).

When you’re the grandson and spittin’ image of Hank Williams and the son of Hank Jr., ordinary rebellion just isn’t going to cut it. True to his linage, Hank III has cut a destructive and drug-addled path through the Nashville establishment. Having visited the finest dives and county jails this country has to offer, he isn’t afraid to share his experiences with you, whether in country form (“17 Months, 39 Days”) or hardcore form (“Eat, F***, Kill”).

Look for the III’s band, Assjack, at the Vogue as well — one of the tightest, most agile working bands in the U.S. He’ll drag you through a genre-swapping ride of country, “hillbilly” and metal with fiery aplomb. A sweaty, drunken, speed-fueled riot of a show is guaranteed. Ol’ Hank might not have done it exactly this way, but then again, ol’ Senior didn’t grow up stealing pills from his daddy and listening to Black Flag and Slayer. If you really want to know what outlaw country is all about, this is the gig to see.
