In Gina Soo Golden’s painting “Mars Distracted,” a nude blonde is reaching around the man seated in front of her, into the bed sheet surrounding his genitals. Both man and woman have their eyes closed, but the man seems unsure that he wants what she is offering. He’s pulling the bed sheet towards him, a bed sheet that materializes out of watery foam. A similar painting with mythological overtones, “Cupid and Psyche on the Rocks with a Twist,” shows a naked female, arrow in hand, offering a drink to a winged Cupid instead of foreplay. These paintings are both from a series entitled “Minor Gods — Major Distractions.” The artist’s interest in the sexes also seems to manifest in “Mars,” which appears to be a detail of the hostile Martian Surface and “Venus,” which shows a wave breaking into bubbly foam.
