The President Benjamin Harrison Home has acquired a historically valuable collection of more than 800 artifacts from Harrison’s descendants, including an example of correspondence between George Washington and Gen. Anthony Wayne, signed by Washington.

In 1777, during the Revolution, Washington issued a set of orders to his generals regarding uniformity of dress, conduct, drill and pay in order to turn what amounted to a mob into a disciplined force capable of matching the British. Among the Father of Our Country’s points: “Gambling of every kind is expressly forbid as the foundation of evil & the Cause of many gallant & brave officers’ Ruin — Games of exercise and for amusement may not only be permitt’d but encourg’d.”

This letter, and other treasures, are now in the Harrison Home museum archives as part of the new Harrison Collection. The President Benjamin Harrison Home is located at 1230 N. Delaware St. For more information, go to www.pbhh.org.
