‘Gee’s Bend’
by Editors Oct 4, 2006
“This exhibition will be a revelation for some, and a long overdue acknowledgement for others,” says the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s leader, Maxwell Anderson, of this exhibition of 70 original quilts by the women of Gee’s Bend, Ala. The exhibition takes a fresh look at the quilting tradition of Gee’s Bend and introduces new artists and new motifs in works ranging from the early 20th century through 2005. Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Tinwood Alliance, Atlanta. The New York Times’ critic Michael Kimmelman has called these quilts “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.” The exhibition opens on Oct. 8 and runs through Dec. 31. The IMA is located at 4000 Michigan Road, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call 317-923-1331 or visit www.ima-art.org.
