Funk revisited
by Rita Kohn Mar 7, 2007

The Funky ’70s Revue
Asante Children’s Theatre
Indiana History Center
Through March 11

The Funky ’70s Revue is a high-energy, thought-provoking revue featuring some of the best new talent in Indianapolis, backed by a strong combo directed by keyboardist Vincent Howard.

The finely tuned Kwanza Choir sets the spirit with “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” and underscores the impetus with “Say It Loud” and “Keep Your Head to the Sky.” Changing ensembles artfully nuance lyrics and music between lead and back-up singers. Especially watch those very young personalities, including Adasia Sublett, Victoria Hawes and Kenneth Bartlett. Sublett, as lead for “Sophisticated Lady,” with A’sha Ervin and Majkaila Prewitt, is a showstopper.

Soloist Darron Marble has the style, voice and delivery to sear into memory the ballad “Before I Let You Go.”

The Academy Dance Ensemble is dynamic with choreography by Mijiza Soyinin. They deliver with individual zest and corps precision.

Original monologues by Victoria Hawes and Joshua Bruton punch up the message of taking personal responsibility for empowerment for self and community alike.
Production qualities are equally professional in design and execution. The group zips through 30 numbers in an ever-changing two hours.

Directed by Deborah Asante, this is a must-see program. It continues through March 11. Tickets at the door are $5 Thursday and $15 all other days. Call 317-297-0020, 317-232-1883 or log onto www.asantechildrenstheatre.org for reservations.
