Indiana Repertory Theatre
Directed by David Bradley
Through May 11.
Iron Kisses, the second Indiana Repertory Theatre show celebrating James Still’s 10 years as playwright in residence, deals with the dichotomy between parents and their adult children.
In it, two siblings, Billy and Barbara, explore their relationships with their parents, as well as their parents’ reactions to Billy’s gay wedding and Barbara’s divorce. The show is divided into three parts. First Billy, played by Ryan Artzberger, takes the stage; then Barbara, played by Constance Macy; and then Billy and Barbara together. When solo, each takes on the characters of mother and father, explaining to the audience how their children’s choices have affected them. The show’s material is bitter- sweet, exploring the love a parent has for a child, but also the chasm that can exist between them as people.
Director David Bradley coaxes a more dynamic performance from Macy, while Artzberger’s characterizations are subtler. While Macy’s transformation into her father is convincing, Artzberger’s mother is humorous in a caricaturish sort of way.
Comedic moments punctuate the show — slow, slow, really funny line, slow, slow, etc. The pacing is uneven. But the message is universal and the actors entertaining enough to make the 90-minute production touching.
Lighting designing Lap Chi Chu created such an elegant lighting sequence that a mention here is absolutely necessary. The set, by scenic designer Russell Metheny, is appropriately sparse, creating a wide, neutral space for the actors.
Iron Kisses continues through May 11.
