Generally, I don’t agree with Steve Hammer. In high school I found him insightful and entertaining, but not so much anymore. I wanted to clarify a few things, and commend this week’s article (Hammer, “Welcome, Barack and Hill,” April 16-23).

First, Sen. Obama has not been canvassing the state relentlessly in the past few weeks. He’s been here only a handful of times, and his wife Michelle, has been here only once. On the other hand, Sen. Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton have been in Indiana on 46 stops, in 30 different cities. I think this fact speaks for itself. I think it shows more care and devotion on the side of the Clintons to come and speak with Hoosiers, than just to bombard us with TV commercials.

Regardless of the facts, I thought Hammer’s article was very nice to both candidates, and also very fair. He referred to both candidates as honorable public servants, compassionate, and hard working. I also liked the fact that Hammer didn’t repeatedly refer to Sen. Obama as “President Obama,” apparently remembering that there are two candidates still in the race. As a Clinton supporter, I feel that only one of those candidates still running is qualified to do the hardest job in America.

I was also glad that Hammer gave that homeless guy a few dollars. We are all struggling to make ends meet, and that kind of simple generosity is rare.

Thanks for being fair to both candidates. I hope that this objective journalism continues!
