Concerts on the Canal; Indiana History Center; June 21

Everett Greene works the expanse of the canal site as intimately as if he’s in a lounge like The Jazz Kitchen. His opening “Summertime,” in Everett time, set the quid pro quo for his way of interpreting the chestnuts of soul and jazz. Pianist Marvin Chandler, bassist Frank Smith and drummer Kenny Phelps walk alongside Greene in backup, as leads and with personalized licks for a program that progresses emotionally, vocally and intellectually in constantly changing tempos. “Isn’t it time to get off the cell phone,” quipped Greene in the direction of a talker just as he finished “Ask Me How Do I Feel?” With two dozen gems strung on a fine linked chain to choose from, this reviewer found the rendition of “My Foolish Heart” to be remarkably faceted, glinting from a soul start to a Latin center and returning to soul as the finish.
