Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School
The Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St.
Friday, June 20, 9:30 p.m., $6, 21+
Tired of the same old life drawing class, with sleepy, bored models and dissatisfied, patriarchal teachers? Want to draw to a soundtrack laid down by Bloomington punk miniaturists The Coke Dares and orchestral hard rockers State? Then make your way to Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, presented by Bottoms Up Burlesque and taking over the Melody Inn Friday night.
Dr. Sketchy is a jazzed-up version of a life drawing class that launched in New York City in 2005, incorporating scandalous performers, art contests, skits, music, prizes and booze without completely negating the original purpose of the class. So, all are free to bring their sketchpad to the event, although if peace and quiet are requirements for creative inspiration, then this is probably not an appropriate forum. Since 2005, Dr. Sketchy franchises have sprouted up throughout the country and world, including Japan and Finland.
The Coke Dares and State plan to release albums this summer, both laid down at Russian Recording in Bloomington. Feelin’ Up is the name of The Coke Dares’ first new one since 2004, due out July 8 — although copies might be available at the show — and fitting 33 tracks in less than 30 minutes.
State doesn’t seem to have a name for their new release, but you can hear several tracks from it on their Myspace — myspace.com/state. “You Shouldn’t Stare” is a standout, with an all-male chorus (compared to the Red Army chorus by one commentator) set against a bare-boned organ part in a minor key with tasteful cello notes throughout. Somewhat creepy stuff, and rather different from “Summerdale,” when the band breaks out the guitars, kicks up the energy and enters more familiar hard rock territory.
