Decorator’s Show House and Garden Walk

With snow on the ground and temperatures well below freezing, it might be hard to believe that spring is around the corner. But with the Annual Preview of the Decorators’ Show House and Garden Walk presented by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, signs of spring abound.

Each year, the guild, along with other generous donors, completely transforms an Indy home into a truly remarkable Show House to benefit Wishard Health Services. Celebrating its 64th consecutive renovation, the guild recently held a Preview Party featuring the “before view” of the 2007 Decorators’ Show House.

Outsider art created by artists from Midtown Community Mental Health Centers adorned the otherwise gutted walls. The Preview Party and Tours boasted bare floors, unfinished molding and non-existent appliances; however, in just a few short months, designers will transform this year’s home into a truly remarkable spring destination. Designers lined up for the project include Carmel Kitchens, Bob Mead Interiors and Cherri Colby of Colby Antiques and Interiors.

This year’s home is located in the historic Meridian-Kessler area. The home was originally built in 1914 and designed by architect Herbert L. Bass, who also designed the Allison Mansion and the Fletcher Manor Home. Historians claim the house was originally built in Arts and Crafts style, but in the late 1920s, the house was remodeled to reflect an English Tudor style with decorative half-timbering and carved interior woodworking. Designers will have a heyday decorating over 5,400 square feet of cavernous rooms, with their many angles and nooks to set this house apart from the rest.

The Opening Night Party will be held on April 27 — reservations are required. Throughout the duration of the Show House exhibit, enjoy several events that will bring designers and their inspirations to the forefront of conversation. Twilight Events will allow visitors to tour the house, listen to music, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and wine, and stroll the gardens. For morning people, enjoy Breakfast on the Boulevard — partaking of a light breakfast while you begin the day with a walk through the Show House.
