Cut those costs
Don’t you think we should be figuring out why exercising the death penalty costs so much more than keeping a prisoner alive for life (News, “In Our Names,” Feb. 7-14)? That should be a no-brainer. Any half-way business-minded person could figure out a way to cut those costs. What gives? The poll given in last week’s issue only gives a glimpse of the current state of affairs, which are grossly mis-managed by the legal system. They can’t even make sure to execute only the guilty folks.
The death penalty is a fitting crime for those that are truly guilty, based on concrete evidence. For all others, give them life ... without parole (and cigarettes, and nudie mags, and television, and Twinkies ... I think you get the drift).
