Contemporary Abstract and Landscape Artists

Four stars
Evan Lurie Gallery

Not all the work displayed on this night was new to these walls, but there was plenty of new work nevertheless. Artist Michael Madzo, on hand for the occasion, described his artistic process as akin to putting together a jigsaw puzzle without having an inkling of the end result. His “canvases” consist of pieces of paper individually painted, varnished and then sewn together. In “The Secret Pleasure,” a girl at the cusp of womanhood, wearing flesh-colored tights and a feather headdress, walks on the air. Her face is elongated and her eyes are focused upwards. The storm-clouded landscape oil paintings of Richard Currier, on the other end of the gallery, seemed to reflect the thunderstorms outside during the Carmel Gallery Walk (of which this show was a part). Currier’s “Levitation Slice” depicts an asteroid-sized watermelon suspended in the air, with a gash down the center, against the backdrop of a turbulent orange sky. Through August; 317-844-8400.
