Unusual Animals Gallery, Harrison Center for the Arts

In the basement of the Harrison Center are not-your-usual kinds of mountains. These mountains are part of an installation being created over the next three months by Cindy Hinant, who is developing the work at the new Unusual Animals Gallery. So far, the installation is a playful abstract landscape consisting of a flat, wall-installed, imaginative paper mountain range. Looking like pointillism with pop culture, Hinant’s mountains are collaged, black and white photocopies of stickers — her trademark material. On the floor stands her familiar pop-up, Foamcore plants. Hinant, the first exhibitor in the basement space, is working with curator Michael Kaufmann to bring four installation artists a year to the gallery — two Indy artists and two national artists. Yes, finally, a space where artists may develop full-scale installations on site. Kaufmann, who works for Asthmatic Kitty Records, said the gallery is an experimental imprint of the label. The Harrison Center is also a collaborator. Look for the “official” opening of “Cascades” in the coming months.
