Butler Ballet stepping up
by Rita Kohn Feb 13, 2008

Ballet icon Paul Taylor’s 1976 work “Cloven Images” headlines a program featuring additional new works by Ballet Austin artistic director Stephen Mills, and by Butler Dance faculty members Cynthia Pratt, Tong Wang and Derek Reid, in Butler Ballet’s concert Great Choreographers.

Susan McGuire, associate professor of dance at Butler, danced with Paul Taylor, where she was in the 1980 restaging of “Cloven Images.”

McGuire proposed remounting the work on Butler’s dancers “because they have the endurance and ability to perform this demanding work. It’s joyous, athletic. David Hochoy says ‘Cloven Images’ contains the most coveted male quartet in all of dance.”

Using Spinoza’s dictum, “Man is a social animal,” Taylor “shows a socially accepted veneer, but there is an undercurrent of the unexpected,” McGuire explained. “He pokes a little fun at us still being animals. It’s the dual nature of man.”

McGuire is re-staging from videos of 1980 and 2002 programs and her “bone memory” of dancing in “Cloven Images.”

Performances are Feb. 15-16 at 8 p.m. at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University. Tickets are $17-$28.50; call 317-940-6444, or TicketMaster.

Tangentially, a free lecture will be offered Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m. at Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall, presented by Denise Jefferson, director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.
