Mention the name Photek to anyone who has followed drum and bass, and you are usually met with tales of adoration for his clinical drum programming and stark soundscapes. From his beginnings at the flashpoint of U.K. drum and bass, to his pursuits in house music, to his forays into remixing such well-known artists as Bjork and David Bowie, to his more recent remixing and programming for Nine Inch Nails on the With Teeth album, Rupert Parkes (as he is known to his mum) has established himself as one of the most eclectic figures to come out of drum and bass.

His debut album, Modus Operandi, combined a jazzman’s musicianship with an expertise in drum programming rarely matched. The following album, Solaris, delved into his house roots and established him as an artist with no boundaries. He followed up these critically acclaimed albums with film scores, most notably for The Italian Job and The Animatrix, establishing himself as an artist with a broad range of abilities beyond electronic music.

His latest project, TEKDBZ, combines his eclectic musical approach with hip-hop lyricism, courtesy of well-known MCs like Mental Sharp, Dre and J. Messinian. It’s a combination that has been explored throughout the lifespan of drum and bass, but that never has felt as organic and complete as TEKDBZ makes it seem.

On Tuesday, July 3, Broke(n) Tuesdays — Indy’s longest-running weekly drum and bass event — will celebrate its second birthday with a stellar lineup, including Photek at the helm. Parkes will bring fresh, unreleased tunes to Indianapolis to show us why he is considered one of the premier drum and bass artists in the world. Joining him are L.A.’s Infiltrata, making his name with releases on TEKDBZ, as well as numerous other established labels.

Cincinnati’s Beet and Bad Lieutenant join the fray with their unique live show, combining live beat programming and keyboard playing with instrumentation. A first for this show is the appearance of the Indy drum and bass “supergroup” Mensa. Dave Owen, Gizzmo, Johnny Utah and Sea Monkey will bring originals never heard before, each with their unique styles. From jazzy, funky flavors, to all-out floor fillers, this is sure to be a treat.

Rounding out the lineup are Just 3 White Guys, a tagteam of Defi, James B and Sound Victum. With crates full of broken beats and heavy bass, as well as some cutting and scratching, these guys will get the floor moving.
