Long a local favorite known for his multi-faceted voice and strong songwriting, Brian Deer doesn’t like to sit still for very long. After gaining a nice following with The Citizens Band, a few years ago Deer set out on his own and released Black Cloud Talk, a strong Americana/nü-country album that featured cameos from the likes of Robbie Fulks and Nate Walcott, keyboardist for Bright Eyes.

Deer will return to Radio Radio Aug. 11 to trot out his newest project, a six-song EP called Found Objects that resulted after a trip to Nashville, Tenn., and a collaboration with his friend, Carey Ott. The two bonded over shared passions for Flaming Lips, Radiohead and frozen pizza and have produced a varied, lilting record that moves from the almost yacht rock overtones (in a good way) of “Let You Down” to the more rough, rambling “Product of Convenience.”

“Nashville is great. I’ve always loved working there because of the talented people that live and work there,” Deer says. “Also, it’s very exciting to be around all that musical history. Ronnie Milsap used to own the studio [Velvet Shoreline] we used for mixing, and before that, Roy Orbison owned it.”

Part of that history has rubbed off on Deer, who has turned into a great country weeper with a deep, expressive voice. Yet, his tightass backing band, The Achievers, can take him wherever he wants to go, from deep roots to bitter pop.

“I think it evolves as my tastes evolve,” he says of his music. “I think my writing has changed from knowing what I want to write to allowing it to flow from the subconscious.”
