Book It
Four stars
Harrison Center Gallery
In the generously themed show Book It: Book Arts Group Show, books are a mere jumping off point for art employing the book as medium or idea. As is often the case with Harrison productions, the theme and show title suggest larger proportions than the actual beast. While this is no exception — this is a relatively intimate show — there are numerous memorable moments. A couple dozen pieces comprise the exhibition, including clever and engaging works by Lorie Lee Andrews (her “edible” book intones in macaroni letters, “So I went from feeling like a flake to thinking outside the box,” and includes a mini box of Frosted Flakes), Elyce Elders (“Miscellaneous Secret Books” is a bookshelf displayed with books with the insides carved out) and Minda Douglas (“Transitory” is three sets of hinged drawings depicting various seemingly random objects: a banana peel, battery, broken eggshell, alkaline battery, etc.). These and other page-turners make for some good summer reading. Through Aug. 30; 317-396-3886.
