Art galleries all over the city will be putting their best work forward for First Friday this week, none more so than Big Car Gallery at the Murphy Art Center, 1043 Virginia Ave., in funky Fountain Square.

In Big Car’s main space will be a show by a pair of Rhode Island School of Design seniors, Julia Bland and Tom Morrill, called Clop Shit Clop: Paintings of Paintings. Bland and Morrill offer painting, textiles and film exploring the weirdness of contemporary spaces. The opening takes place from 6-midnight March 7 in Suite 215. A special coffee reception with the artists happens on March 8 in the gallery at 1 p.m.

But that’s not all. The Big Car folks have dubbed the hall outside their regular gallery the Sidecar Gallery. There you will find an installation by Phillip Barcio called “Television Hates Itself,” which anthropomorphizes television in order to explore our media soup.

And if that’s not enough, there will be live music by Amo Joy, Vagabonds of the Railway, Paper Son and Gill starting at 10 p.m. A $5 donation for the bands is requested.

Next door, in Suite 210, installation artist, composer and musician Craig Colorusso of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be performing his “MB89” project from 6-10 p.m. “MB89” is an experimental sound, cloth and light installation. The Murphy Arts Center is one stop on Colorusso’s 10-city tour thanks to a collaboration between Big Car Gallery and Biscuits & Gravy Gallery.
