In Forrest Formsma’s oil painting “Reflections on Youth,” a young man floats upside down in the air with only his head and shoulders visible. Sure, it’s a blatant homage to Chagall, but there’s much more going on here: thick, abstract-expressionist brushstrokes in a dark blue palette, still life mystery-food in a bowl behind green bottles of detergent and a disembodied pair of eyes looking out over said bowl. Perhaps these are the eyes of the painting’s subject, reflected in the paint, as he stands beside you. Paintings by Emma Overman, whose work is featured on the cover of this year’s IndyFringe program, hang by the front door. Meanwhile, the subjects in Robert Meko’s provocative series “Self Portrait as Fountain Square People” look at you sideways — with four pairs of eyes — from the back wall of the gallery. The other talented Best of VisualFringe artists, using a wide variety of media, are worth your time, too. Through Aug. 29; 317-634-8020, www.deanjohnson.com.
