Beowulf
by Ed Johnson-Ott Feb 27, 2008

Two stars (PG-13 or NR)
Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover

The warrior Beowulf (Ray Winstone) fights the demon Grendel (Crispin Glover) and royally pisses off the beast’s creepy-sexy mother (Angelina Jolie) in this high-octane motion-capture (like The Polar Express, only not quite as annoying. Close, though.) animated flick from director Robert Zemeckis, based on the Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary graphic novel. Facial expressions get muted in the motion-capture process, sucking the vitality out of the film. 115 minutes. DVD INFO: In addition to the regular edition, an unrated “director’s cut” with “more intense footage” is available. Extras include deleted scenes and featurettes on the technical stuff and the art, along with the history of Beowulf and how it was retooled for a modern audience.
