Erykah Badu The Vogue Thursday, Feb. 6
Last Thursday night, Indianapolis was treated to the unique stylings of Erykah Badu. Sporting a large Afro with a pick boldly displayed, silver knee-high boots, jeans and a long black coat, she got right down to work with a mix of songs that showcased her many talents. Badu"s ability to sing as soulful and jazzy as Billie Holiday, or rap like one of the best, is astounding. She would often buffer these styles with freeform jams consisting of everything from hand drums to samples of classic songs from the past. Set standouts were songs such as "On & On," from her first album, Baduism, which really got the crowd excited early in the set. "Certainly" showed off her great jazz vocals. As she launched into "Cleva," from her newest album Mama Gun, she removed the large wig to reveal her close-cut, "natural" hair, driving the crowd crazy. She performed "Love of My Life," her ode to hip-hop, made extra special with an "old-school" break in the middle that included pieces of songs, including "Paul Revere" by the Beastie Boys and "Rapper"s Delight" by the Suger Hill Gang, as well as other great hip-hop tunes. Her encore included a song by Billie Holiday and finished with "Bag Lady," one of her standout songs from Mama Gun. During the song she twice did some crowd surfing, a testimony to how much she trusts her fans - and how much they love her.
