Nikki Cormaci On the dance floor at Savoy 2200 W. 86th St. 317-824-0800 www.savoyindy.com Club owners throughout Indy seem to be betting that if they provide the patron more than one aesthetic experience under the same roof, club-hopping night-crawlers will linger longer. At Savoy, room by room transformations of color, music and design satisfy the desire for multiple nightlife experiences without the fuss of relocation. At least three options graced patrons at the Savoy on a Friday night. Each one was neatly compartmentalized in a cocoon of insulated space, complete with its own distinct yet analogous segment of the sound sampler — hip-hop, reggae or salsa. With its wooden white chairs tucked into white round tables and interior décor of glaring minimalism, the dance floor of the back bar, housing the live salsa band Orquesta Bravo! on Friday, April 7, had the formal intimacy of a wedding reception. Mostly unoccupied white leather couches lined the periphery of the room. David Letterman was muted on the flat screens above the bar. Ten to 20 couples enjoyed abundant space on the dance floor. There aren’t a lot of salsa bands in Indy, so when a group like Orquesta Bravo! books a show locally, the whole big, happy extended family of salsa students and dancers make an appearance. And whenever the local salsa scene seizes the dance floor, WASPy wallflowers step aside, clutching their Coronas in the shadows. Here is where Savoy’s aesthetic variety show comes in handy. The moment that those dips and spins on the salsa stage become too daunting, or the reggae room loses its libido, the familiar grind of hip-hop is just a stroll away, complete with its own dance floor, bar and flat screen TV.
