It was a good idea before, it’s a good idea now. “Shared Spaces/Shared Voices” is a public art project for Indiana writers, administered by the Arts Council of Indianapolis. It’s an opportunity for writers to produce original poetry and prose for display on IndyGo buses, bringing literary art into the everyday lives of people riding public transportation.

The idea of putting literary art on buses was first introduced here in the 1980s by the Writers’ Center. It has also been done effectively in other cities in this country and abroad.

The deadline for submissions is April 28. Applicants may be adults or youth. Up to three pieces of original, previously unpublished work can be submitted. The pieces must be no longer than 60 words and must respond to the theme of “Shared Spaces/Shared Voices.” Adjudication will take place in May and the selected pieces will be launched in collaboration with the Indy Fringe Festival on Aug. 25. The pieces will appear on buses, bus shelters and in selected coffeehouses on bus routes.
