John Mellencamp’s passion for painting has been recognized for some time. What may be less known is a certain doggedness that Mellencamp brings to the work. “I’m not an artist,” he says. “I’m just a guy with a lot of tenacity. I have the ability not to quit. Most people quit on everything too soon. Most people don’t have the ability to get things done, and that’s the difference between me and most people. I don’t quit.”

Mellencamp will show a new crop of 27 paintings in the Herron Galleries at the Herron School of Art and Design. The new works combine portraiture, expressive form and a willingness to address sociopolitical issues. The show opens Nov. 18 from 5-8 p.m. Otherwise, gallery hours are daily 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays until 7 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
