Music conference

Butler University hosts the Society of Composers Inc. Region 5 conference Nov. 11-13, bringing about 45 composers from around the country to Indianapolis to showcase their latest works. Nine free concerts will be held at various locations during the three days, featuring everything from solo vocal pieces to large ensembles employing jazz, eclecticism, minimalism and other avant-garde techniques.

The performances are free and open to the public. For more information about the schedule, call 317-940-3236 or visit butler.edu/sci.

“It’s a great opportunity for not only our students but also people in Indianapolis to come and see what the state of new music is in the United States,” said Frank Felice, Butler associate professor of music and SCI national board member. Felice said 150 composers from around the United States submitted compositions to perform at the conference. Of those, 50 were chosen to present their work. He expects 40-45 to attend, including Felice’s fellow Butler composer and faculty member Michael Schelle. “Stylistically, it’s everything from very conservative, very tonal composers to very wonderful avant-garde, strange, weird, theatrical kinds of things,” Felice said.
