Lugar awarded Nobell Appease Prize
by Justin Jest Nov 13, 2002
Indiana"s Sen. Richard Lugar says he has bounced back from the disappointment of being passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize now that he has been named this year"s winner of the Nobell Appease Prize. The prize, awarded by the Nobell (Kentucky) Elks Club, honors the politician who most spectacularly abandons his principles in favor of appeasing the misguided leader of his party. In recognizing Lugar, the Nobell committee specifically cited the Republican senator"s recent vote to allow President Bush discretion to launch a preemptive strike on Iraq. "From his intelligent and sensitive statements made both recently and throughout his distinguished career as a foreign relations expert, it is quite clear that Lugar knows this policy is insanely dangerous and misguided," said Nobell committee Chair Eldon Hufnagel. "But he sucked it up and did the wrong thing so he could appease his small-minded president. Senator Lugar is very worthy of our annual award." "This is quite an honor," Lugar said. "When you are smarter than the leaders of your party but unwilling to stand up to them, you learn to appreciate the fine art of appeasement. I"m humbled that this key theme of my Senate career is being recognized."
