Extra Blue Kind cd release show with Miranda Sound and Vess Ruhtenberg
Friday, Aug. 5
Radio Radio 9 p.m., $6 at the door

Although it’s stated throughout yet not deliberately pronounced, The Tide and the Undertow represents a rock band that’s finally figured out who they are, rather than trying to decide what to be. There are still glimpses of the shimmery melodies that made up the bulk of the material from their initial boom in 2001. The difference, as unfolded in the completion of this record, is the sense of patient purpose in the execution. The record’s fully-realized progression may also be attributed in part to enlisted dial turner, Vess Ruhtenberg (Hoti, former United States 3, the Pieces), who stepped in to produce the album at his Queensize Twin-Air Studio in Indianapolis with fellow musician/studio techs Andy Fry (Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s) and LonPaul Elrich (Hoti) credited as engineers.

Extra Blue Kind

The new material showcases a group of guys that have got the quick burning material out of their system and are ready to utilize their abilities to write enduring records, not just catchy songs with limited shelf live.

The only noticeable aspect to tweak to satisfy my taste would be replacing the shinier acoustic guitar parts with a fuzzier electric tone. Recommended tracks: “You Came Crashing,” “Trails Turn,” “Our Only Appeal,” and “Keep Me Around.” (www.extrabluekind.com)

A second all-ages release show will follow on Saturday Aug 6, at the Harrison Center for the Arts with Shadeland, Wolfy and Missing Six. Show at 8:00 PM and $7 cover at the door.
