Talbott Street Winter Ball

Thursday nights are not always the best time for a show, considering the work week. The turnout for Talbott Street’s Winter Ball bucked this trend, though. Early on, folks began pouring in and for a good two-thirds of the evening, the club was packed. The musical lineup didn’t hurt.

The show was kicked off by local drag chica Vicky St. James, who opened by dancing around to “I Love Rock and Roll” to get the audience hyped. She didn’t stretch out her time on stage, but rather quickly moved on to introducing the first group, Seven Degrees from Center.

As soon as the curtain opened, cheering ensued, as all the members of 7DFC had chosen to also dress in drag for the event. Performing a very short, three-song set, 7DFC set the stage for a night of excellent music. Fog machines went nuts, wigs were lost, but 7DFC plowed on through.

SX CP10 followed, featuring one of the most incredible female vocalists I have heard in a while. They had a funky, Motown sound, and dance rhythm. There is nothing quite as good as a solid, soulful sound and danceable beat for revving up a crowd, and SX CP10 nailed it. They also cranked out a fun cover of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls,” a somewhat atypical choice for a punk band.

After an Elvis impersonator (which was just strange), The Jabs closed out the evening in true rock style. Makeup and boas abounded, and the band spent a good deal of their set complaining that they had no bass sound. When their bassist finally gave up and jumped into the crowd, it was a perfect ending to the show.
